ABOUT PEACH

In the past, based on its botanical name (Prunus persica), it was thought that the homeland of the peach was Iran or the Caucasus. But research studies over time have shown that wild peach was never found in Iran. However, it is determined that its homeland is East Asia and China (Central China). Peach is a type of fruit that has a very wide growing area in the world. It is grown in almost every part of Europe except England and northern countries (Finland, Norway, Sweden). 16th century to America.' It was taken by Spanish sailors. It grows in both the north and south of America and is the most grown fruit in Australia and New Zealand. The areas where peach is grown in the African continent are expanding day by day. The largest peach growing countries in the world are respectively; Italy, USA, China, Greece, Spain, France, Russia, Turkey, Mexico and Argentina

Peach is a type of fruit that can adapt to different climatic conditions. It can be grown between 25-45 latitudes in the north and south of the equator. The optimum altitude for normal growth is 500-600 m. between. It can be seen that it grows up to 1500 m in hot climates. In our country; It can be grown in the warm climate Mediterranean Region, the temperate climate Marmara Region and the cold climate Eastern Anatolia Region. It is grown in a very wide ecology in our country. There are various climatic factors that limit peach cultivation. These include low winter temperatures, winter chilling needs of varieties, late spring frosts and low summer temperatures.

When the winter temperature drops to –18 and –20 °C, the eyes and annual shoots freeze. When the temperature drops to –25 °C  trees can freeze completely. However, factors such as the duration of the low temperature that may occur, the physiological condition of the tree during frost periods and the amount of moisture in the air play an important role in the tree's being affected by frost. Redhaven variety is the most resistant to frost, followed by JHHale and dixired varieties.

Peach needs between 250 and 1250 hours of winter chilling on the basis of different varieties. When trees cannot complete their winter cooling needs, they shake off the flowers and flower buds. Flowering is delayed and irregular.

The soil demand of the peach varies according to the rootstock it is on. The most suitable soils for cultivation; Strained, clayey, sandy, pebbly, national, deep and quickly warming alluvial soils. Soil PH should be 6-7. It can also be grown in sandy soils when adequate fertilization and irrigation are provided. Soil layer depth is 1 m. The soils with more than . In clayey, heavy, cold soils with high ground water, shoots cannot mature. In such cases, gumming occurs.

Peach is a plant that completes all its development in a short time and bears fruit early. It responds easily to good care. The soil must be well cultivated and prepared. Peach orchards should be prepared by deep and superficial plowing before planting. With the latest version, it is most appropriate to give 1-2 tons of burned farm manure per decare. The grafting area is 5-10 cm from the soil surface. Saplings are planted in a way that remains above and in the stagnant period. In determining the planting spacing; Factors such as climate, soil strength, rootstock, growth power of the variety should be taken into account. In strong soil and well-maintained conditions, the range is kept wider. In general, the planting spacing is 5x5 m. However, it is most appropriate to determine this range in the light of the factors mentioned. Before the garden is established; The purpose for which the garden was established, the objectives expected from the facility should be determined very well, and a solid ground preparation should be made by considering the necessary technical and economic infrastructure on a large scale.

Peach trees require more pruning than other fruit trees. The reason for this is that the fruits are formed on 1-year branches. There should be enough annual shoots to get regular crops every year. They are very sensitive in terms of cultivation and can be long-lasting with good pruning, fertilization and irrigation. As with all fruits, it is very important for peaches to form a suitable crown on the tree and to preserve this shape in the following years. For this reason, before shaping the fruit trees, some physiological characteristics of the fruit species and variety to be grown, the ecological conditions and economic criteria should be examined well.

Shape Trimming:  When shaping fruit saplings, it is necessary to know the nutritional physiology and accordingly the special pruning requests of species and varieties, special branching shapes, the reaction of the branches and branches against pruning, and environmental ecological conditions. In arid regions, fruit trees should be given closed shapes (such as a branched shape) suitable to create an artificial environment that will retain moisture in their interior and to protect them from the harmful effects of the sun. It is desirable that the stems be squat. Considering these criteria; tapestry, different apex-branched and palmette crowning shapes should be applied in the most appropriate way.

Crop Pruning:  Since the fruits are formed on 1-year-old shoots, they are not tipped. However, branches that are dense and prevent airing and distort the shape of the crown are removed from the bottom. In this way, it is ensured that new shoots are formed that will also form the fruit eyes of the next year. Meanwhile, aged, broken, unhealthy branches are removed. Basically, basically; The tree's vegetation development and fruit set balance should be well established and protected.

Peach trees are fast growing and very productive trees. It requires a good nutrition with rapid development and high yield. Otherwise, growth in trees slows down and stops. In these gardens; It should be used in commercial fertilizers along with farmyard manure and green manure. Fertilization rate; It is closely related to the age of the tree, its yield status, the amount of nutrients in the soil and ecology. For this reason, chemical fertilization should be done in line with the leaf and soil analyzes to be made. In this way, the most economical and most suitable fertilization will be made. The success of fertilization on the tree and on the crop depends on good pruning and fruit thinning. In general, it is ideal to apply 1-2 tons of burned farm manure per decare every 2-3 years. When it cannot be given, a suitable green manure plant can be planted and mixed with the soil.
